Plans launched to expand Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

The Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens master plan is coming to fruition, thanks to a building project the Arts and Recreation Foundation of Overland Park launched.

For visitor MaryLou Taylor, the Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is a quaint jewel in the area that shows off the natural Kansas landscape.

“I love the manicuredness, I love each one of the gardens,” Taylor said.

The expansion includes a new 22,000-square-foot Visitors Center that will help increase its educational program.

“The second is the surrounding area to the visitor’s center,” said Arts and Recreation Foundation Executive Director, Vicki Lilly. “New gardens, new parking, new pond, outdoor spaces for events.”

It will also include a 250-acre sculpture garden with an 800-seat Amphitheatre.

The total project cost is $12.4 million.

“We have committed to raise $10 million towards the project,” Lilly said.

Through the capital improvements budget, the City of Overland Park will make up the difference.

So far over $8 million has been raised.

“I think what is here is beautiful and to make it bigger is just a fabulous idea,” Taylor said.

The plan is to break ground on the expansion in year 2020.

However, that date can change if they raise the remaining funds sooner.
