KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Cyclists throughout the region are remembering a man who rode with passion and supported his teammates.

Kansas City police say Casey Saunders was killed on Sunday after a wreck in the area of 18th and Oak during the Tour of Kansas City event.

Saunders, 30, competed in elite races around the country.

"He knew he had to work hard to win," said team manager John Merli. "He's a wonderful young man. Sharp, intelligent, kind, honorable and all the qualities you'd expect in a great person."

During the tour, Saunders collided with a fence while making a sharp turn at 18th and Oak. Police say he died of a head injury.

"This was a race....you don't expect that," said Sam Swearngin, president of Cycling Kansas City. "This tragedy speaks to how vulnerable cyclists actually are."

Saunders' fellow bicyclists will ride in St. Louis in his honor on Tuesday night.
