OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -

Wine and birthday cake. It's the perfect combination for a grownup birthday party celebrating an Olathe vineyard.

KC Wine Co. in Olathe is turning two years old, so it's time to celebrate -- responsibly -- with the KC Wine Birthday Bash.

The vineyard is hosting a big birthday party Friday through Sunday.

The music is free and you get a slice of birthday cake when you buy some wine. Then you can enjoy it while overlooking the gorgeous scenery.

KC Wine Co.’s co-owner Kirk Berggren says they're enjoying what they call a "local vineyard boom" that has surprised them. Vineyards are sprouting up across parts of Johnson and Miami Counties in Kansas.

“There's a couple things,” he said. “One, people are loving to know where their food comes from. The whole foods, organic, homegrown, is very popular.”

“Also, the millennials,” Berggren continued, "which surprised us." "The younger crowd loves their wine," he said. "It's not the older crowds, but the younger people who really love to come out.”

Berggren said that when he and his wife opened the vineyard in Olathe two years ago, they knew they had a strong base of wine lovers in the Midwest. However, they were really surprised by how many millennials are wine connoisseurs.

He also said that, because of the climate in the metro, they're able to grow a unique variety of grapes that are not produced in other places. However, they're also importing grapes from other regions and processing them into wine in Olathe.

The party on Friday ends at 8 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, it will run from noon until 6 p.m. As always, make sure you have a safe ride home arranged ahead of time.
