JOHNSON COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -

An Overland Park man is facing charges after attempting to make fireworks in his home.

Jonathan Hoffman, 29, is charged with felony criminal use of explosives.

Authorities say firefighters were called on June 9 to a home in the 11200 block of Eby Avenue to make sure Hoffman’s home was safe while he was mixing chemicals inside.

Authorities discovered that, while Hoffman was attempting to make homemade fireworks, he was overcome by the chemicals. He was then taken to an area hospital.

Hoffman suffered serious chemical burns to his body.

While inside the home, police and fire personnel began to experience a burning sensation in their eyes and throats. All personnel left the home and called the Overland Park Bomb Squad.

A warrant for the home was executed and bomb-making materials, a dozen bottles of liquid and powdered chemicals, and a pipe bomb were found inside.

Officer John Lacy said Hoffman was trying to make an M-80. He also said that if Hoffman had only had fireworks, he wouldn't be in custody.

The FBI was notified of the incident.

Hoffman was being held on $50,000 bond. He went in front of a judge at the Johnson County Courthouse on Friday and his bond was reduced to $10,000.

The family who lives next door was shocked. "My mom text me saying there's all these fire trucks out front and some police cars and she sees policeman with, like, their bulletproof shields going into the house," Christin Warren said.

Other neighbors nearby said it's hard to believe what was happening so close to home.

"I mean, he could blow up his house or hurt some people or something," Matt Summerouo said. "So yeah, it's disturbing."

"It's shocking," Christin Warren said. "I would have never thought, you know. Anybody. Because we've got really nice neighbors around here and his family is really nice."
