KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

An abandoned railroad bridge is bringing people on both sides of the state line together to fight for a common cause.

Officials in both Kansas City, KS and Kansas City, MO are fighting to bring new life to the Kaw River Bridge near Kemper Arena.

The bridge is currently closed and non-working but the goal is to make it a landmark destination and bike trail.

An ongoing engineering assessment will determine the bridge’s structural integrity. If everything checks out, the plan will move forward.

The new vision is to transform the abandoned bridge into a bike or pedestrian connection between KCK and KCMO.

But there are other ideas swirling around the bridge, such as using it for commercial works or a restaurant.

When the project is finished, the hope is to have the community enjoy the river.

Officials are inviting the public to bring their ideas to a project planning meeting on Thursday.

The meeting will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Wagstaff Theatre located at the American Royal Center.
