KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Jackson County announced on Tuesday it will not host its annual Fourth of July fireworks display over Longview Lake.

After five years of hosting fireworks at Longview Lake, Michele Newman, Director of Parks and Recreation for Jackson County says the event was canceled due to budget cuts.

"This event runs about $154,000 and you know there is no guarantee that you will get those type of sponsorships to assist you with the event,” Newman said.

The county’s website said the decision was made “to ensure that Jackson County Parks and Recreation’s facilities and events remain some of the best and most affordable in the country.”

Newman said that the county started notifying vendors and the fireworks company of the cancellation in January. She said it was even left off of special event calendars.

Now, people who once celebrated at the lake have to find another place to watch fireworks.

"I really like how they match it up with the music and everything, said Megan Rodenberg. “It's great for kids. It's great to get in and out of. It's kind of hard to get in and out of Corporate Woods and downtown."

The money saved by cutting the Fourth of July celebration was used for infrastructure needs like dock repair and replacement, and roofing on park shelters.

One man didn’t seem to mind the county’s cutback. "They're kind of fun to watch sometimes, but I don't think it's worth that much money,” Joe Rexwinkle said.

Fireworks at Longview Lake are canceled indefinitely because there are so many places to watch fireworks on July Fourth. However, the county is planning to replace that event with a Summer Jam at Longview Lake in June to kick off to the summer.

Jackson County officials also said the county will be focusing its efforts on other events such as this year’s 30th Annual Christmas in the Park Celebration.
