LAFAYETTE COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

The people of Mayview are grieving after an area firefighter was killed in a car accident Monday evening.

Jeff Sanders’ family said he was also a farmer and even ran a road grader for the town.

Those who knew Sanders and his family said he was part of the fabric of Mayview, which has a population of about 200 people.

Almost everybody in the town knew Sanders and everyone else involved in the accident.

Kristin Aardema Faigh, a reverend at the Zion United Church of Christ, said Sanders’ family is a special part of Mayview.

“Jeff Sanders did everything and anything that could be helpful in this town,” Faigh said.

Bryce Neher said he was a friend of Sanders. He even baled Sanders' hay just last week.

“It affects everybody,” Neher said. “Everyone knows everyone and their friends. I was friends with both of them.”

Odessa and Higginsville fire departments are taking care of any calls in Mayview Tuesday and until further notice.

The fire board plans to meet Tuesday night with a tragedy specialist.
