OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -

Olathe Northwest High School was on lock down after a handgun was located on school property.

During that lock down, police were also searching for a missing student.

Police were called about 2:30 p.m. Thursday to the school located at 21300 College Blvd. They say the gun was found inside a backpack of a student.

As uniformed police officers blocked entrances and exits, Brandy Sosa got a text from her daughter. The freshman told her mom an announcement informed students to stay in their classrooms.

"She was a little excited, maybe a little nervous when she got the announcement," Sosa said.

Soon, other parents were notified from the school that dismissal would be delayed because of that gun.

"It's really scary," Sosa said. "You take it seriously."

Police found identification inside the backpack and put the school on lock down to search for the owner.

"We were essentially trying to make sure everybody was safe," said Olathe Police Department Sgt. Logan Bonney. "So that we can make sure everyone can go home safely."

After the lock down was lifted, the district released this statement:

The lockdown has been lifted. The Olathe Police Department has given us the all clear that we can safely dismiss our students.
Thank you for your patience as we have worked through this issue. Bus routes will run, but will be late. All other students will be dismissed as regularly planned.

We greatly appreciate the support and partnership of our students, staff, parents and law enforcement partners in keeping our students safe.
