PARKVILLE, MO (KCTV) -

A 30-year-old holiday tradition almost came to an abrupt halt.

For years, the residents of Parkville have decorated the trees along Missouri Highway 9 with Christmas decorations. But this year, the decorations have been taken down after they were deemed a safety hazard.

The trees along the highway now sit bare and the Missouri Department of Transportation says they took the decorations down.

"We feel like the Grinch stole Christmas from Parkville," resident Deborah Gant said.

"The ornaments on the trees are just fun for everyone to see," resident Molly Green said.

But what may be enjoyable to some, MoDOT considered a driving hazard.

MoDOT released a statement saying, "Our policy states that anything that can be viewed as a ‘driver distraction’ must be removed. that includes memorials and in this case holiday decorations."

"It is a big deal,” Green said. “I think it's a bigger deal than MoDOT realizes. Someone said, 'Get it done,' and someone brought four trucks out here and took it down."

It was such a big deal, that it caused Missouri Rep. Nick Marshall to step in.

"As of right now, I am hopeful this can be resolved,” Marshall said. “Decorating these trees is a wonderful Christmas tradition that must be allowed to continue."

The resolution may come sooner rather than later for the Parkville community.

Marshall has been in touch with MoDOT. He says, after expediting a special permit, they hope to bring back the Christmas spirit to the city of Parkville.

“We just can't fathom that there would ever be a problem with someone putting up holiday decorations on trees to make a roadway look prettier," resident Conner Blinzler said.
