KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A Line Creek Elementary School teacher is the recent winner of KCTV5's Read to Achieve program.

First-grade teacher Shannon C. Smith received a $1,000 check from the Missouri chapter of the National Education Association.

She was nominated by parent Terra Carter because she goes out of her way to make sure that her students are understanding and learning what needs to be known.

"She has done something very nice for my son with his reading. She sends books home every Monday for him to read to me as well as letting me turn them in the following week for new ones. It has helped my son in many ways. The best thing about Mrs. Smith is that kids come first, and she is very protective of their safety," Carter said.

The Missouri and Kansas NEAs are sponsoring Read to Achieve. If you would like to nominate a teacher, click here.
