KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Firefighters rescued a contractor trapped following a trench collapse.

Management with East Hills Village Apartments said the trapped worker was working on a water line update project when trench collapsed.

The apartments are located in the 7600 block of Monroe Avenue. Firefighters were called to the scene about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Crews on the scene say the man is buried up to his waist. He is alert and is helping dig himself out. Emergency workers are treating the man for some injuries. He is expected to be OK.

"You could assess almost 40 tons that they were lifting there - so many think about your house being set firmly into the ground and then you can understand the force that was just on his midsection,” said James Garrett of the Kansas City Fire Department. "I think about if that were to come up to his chest area because dirt was very volatile. That would impede him from being able to expand his chest to be able take a breath in.”

No one else was seriously injured in the incident.

Residents have experienced some inconvenience having to park down the street and walk back to their apartments.

Investigators from OSHA and the fire department are expected to remain on the scene Wednesday evening trying to figure out exactly what went wrong.
