OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

A crime is popping up once again in the metro targeting moms dropping off and picking up kids at daycare.

It is a crime of opportunity. Mothers think they’re just running into the daycare quickly to either leave their child or pick them up. In the process, they leave their purse in the car unlocked.

On Tuesday, this happened at Primrose School of Overland Park near Quivira Road and 135th Street.

Three moms were targeted. One lost $200 , the other $350, and one had damage done to her car and facing a $1,000 loss.

Police are still searching for whoever did this. They’re now warning others to lock their car no matter where they are, even if they just hop out for a minute.

This is especially true during the holiday season.

“When people leave their gifts inside their vehicles, burglars can see that in plain view. It’s a crime of opportunity at that point. If their doors are unlocked or windows rolled down, they are going to take their items,” said Officer John Lacy with Overland Park Police Department

Police have seen the same crime happen in years past as well.

In January 2015, thieves targeted cars left unlocked at KinderCare, Kids ‘R’ Kids and La Petite Academies.
