KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A local mother and her four kids escaped a house fire Tuesday afternoon.

The fire happened about 1:30 p.m. at 80th Street and Garfield in Kansas City.

Audrey Spangle said she was cooking in the kitchen when she turned around and saw smoke.

"All I remember is grabbing kids and running out the back door," Spangle said.

She said one of the kids got a hold of a lighter and caught some blankets on fire.

She was able to get the kids, who are between 2 and 7 years old in age, out of the door.

The family dog was killed in the fire.
