Forte: Police agencies performed with "valor" in Kansas City shootout that wounded seven

Posted: Updated:

A weekend shootout left seven people injured in Kansas City at Gregory and Prospect.

One of the suspects claims he was shot by police and was treated for minor injuries. Six of the seven shooting victims has been released from the hospital.

Kansas City Police Chief Darryl Forté, in a blog post Monday night, commended the action taken by police on Sunday.

"That said, the police response to this incredibly dangerous incident is one of which all Kansas City, Mo., and metro-area residents should be proud," Forté wrote. "Much of that started with excellent direction and coordination from dispatchers."

Forté said officers from eight different agencies assisted with the response.

"Where others would flee, they went right into the hail of gunfire. They risked their own lives and safety to protect the residents of our city, and their valor has not gone unnoticed," Forté said. "Everyone who responded to the Gregory and Prospect area that night showed up ready to work and with a positive attitude, even knowing the danger and the magnitude of the task ahead."

On the Missouri side, the Ferrelview, Independence, North Kansas City Police, Raytown Police, Missouri Highway Patrol and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office assisted in the response.

The Leawood and Prairie Village police departments assisted on the Kansas side.
