LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -

Two Lawrence families blame their landlord for being homeless.

The tenants say there are no words to describe the mold, mice and sewage problems inside their apartments. Their homes were condemned Monday morning.

Whitney Anderson is nine months pregnant with four young kids. She has been staying at a motel courtesy of strangers who saw and read her family’s story and paid her bill.

"I‘m so filled with gratitude I could cry," she said.

She was stunned when her landlord stuck a porta-potty in the back alley after a plumber told residents the sewage line is collapsed.

Anderson says her landlord advised her to give her kids sponge baths and use the porta-potty.

Signs on her apartment windows say the unit is unfit for humans. Other tenants agree.

"The rats are the biggest issue up here," Ottis Mater said.

The downstairs neighbors report the same problem.

"They’ve left little presents all along our dishes," Bryce Curtis said.

The tenants say they were advised to buy a cat. Then came the tipping point with clogged sewage lines.

"Her solution was to offer a porta potty and told us to be thankful for that," Curtis said. "Just no words really."

Both tenants are getting donations from community groups. They also reported the problems to the city.

"I don’t know what else to say. That’s when we involved code enforcement because this is not kosher," Anderson said.

The tenants say this battle isn’t over and they are reviewing their legal options.

The landlord is working on getting licensed and says she will fix the problems. She says she will pay the motel bills. Her tenants say this is the first they’ve heard of that offer but think that’s only fair.
