MISSION, KS (KCTV) -

It’s easy to get caught up in shopping lists for the holidays, but it is important to pay attention to your surroundings and protecting yourself.

Self-defense experts like Eric Siley say this shopping season is ideal for criminals and warn that the most important place to be alert is in the parking lot.

“People need to be aware of what’s happening around them when they’re in their vehicle,” said Siley. “When I get into a vehicle, I’ve checked it and I’m mobile. I’m not in there just waiting. If I’m waiting, there’s a reason.”

Siley also said that people are most vulnerable when packing bags of gifts and holiday savings into their cars.

Police typically step up patrols this time of year, as shoplifting is one of the most common crimes during the holiday season.

Siley advises people to do a quick check around all of the parts of their car before getting in and not getting lost looking at their phone before driving, even when feeling safe inside the vehicle.
