OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

In basketball, the most important part of the uniform is probably the shoes. For the Shawnee Mission North boys basketball team, the shoes are even more special when they come from LeBron James.

The day the coach let the players know about the shoes, it was just supposed to be just a scrimmage day for the team.

Sophomore Tremaine Jackson takes us back: “Before the season started, our coach asked us for our size and our shirt size. ‘Cause we got shoes with them, but we didn’t know we were getting shoes.”

Not just any shoes, but a pair of James’ new shoes: The Soldier 10s.  It’s all in an effort to motivate the team, coming off of their first state championship last season.

Some players were a little more hopeful.

“At first we thought LeBron was going to come in, just because he said we have something special for you,” said sophomore Amari Williams, “but the shoes’ll do, since he couldn’t come.”

Now it's about appreciating the gesture from an all-time great.

“It was pretty cool to know that, out of all the schools, that he recognizes us and that our hard work is paying off,” said sophomore Kyterrian Harris. “And, you know, that we’re getting recognized by a superstar like LeBron and not just, you know, anybody.”

Because they’re amateurs, the shoes will only be worn during games. Once the players graduate, they’ll be able to buy and keep them.
