KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

It's one of the biggest Thanksgiving traditions in the Midwest and people came from across the region tonight to see it.

We're talking about the Plaza Lights.

It is such a big tradition for a lot of folks, but just about everyone KCTV5 met was watching for the first time.

Except for one young couple, who will likely remember this night more intensely than most there.

As the audience was counting down for the lights, there was another countdown going silently in Eric Robinson's head.

It's a moment he'd been planning for barely more than a week to take advantage of both of their families being in town for the holiday.

It’s likely fair to say that the fireworks weren't the only things lighting up.

"I can't even wrap my head around this right now!” said Alisabeth Schlager, who took time to scream and show her ring. “I had no idea. They were rushing me down here. Like, ‘We need to get down here.’ I was like, ‘Relax. We can see the Plaza Lights from everywhere. Take a chill pill.’"

"I'm just thankful she said yes,” Robinson said.

Some people took a spot atop shoulders to get a view of the entertainment. Others put a little more muscle into it. Meanwhile, performers twirled their way out of one holiday into another.

The colorful glow is a sign of Christmas on the horizon, which might be another reason Robinson chose the Plaza Lights as the spot to pop the question.

"Eric is obsessed with Christmas,” Schlager said. “If I could let him decorate two months before Christmas, he would. I guess I'm marrying Santa Claus."

It's a night that brings smiles, and even awe, to many. However, the lights shone a little brighter for this couple. "It's something we can really treasure for the rest of our lives,” said Robinson.

The groom-to-be's uncle called it a Christmas miracle, though he wouldn't clarify if the miracle was his nephew settling down or his girlfriend, now fiancé, saying yes.
