Police look for killer of Kansas City man who was shot while walking

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A man out walking in Northeast Kansas City was shot, robbed and left for dead.

The man was killed early Tuesday morning near St. John and Cypress.

Police are looking for leads to find the man's killer.

"We are definitely trying to piece together what happened," said Kansas City police sergeant Kari Thompson. "If you have any information on what happened to this individual who lost his life as a result of someone stealing their cell phone, please call."

Investigators identified the victim as Corey Walls of Kansas City. Walls was an Air Force veteran.

After he was shot, he told police he didn't know the man who did it.

He later died at a hospital.

Residents say the part of town where the shooting happened is no stranger to crime.

"I walk to the store by myself and you know, that's a concern to me," resident Lisa Skinner said. "To know that maybe something might happen to me is concerning. I try not to worry about it."

Police have long tried to combat that fear of crime by reminding people they can say what they know anonymously.

They're hoping it happens in this case.
