KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A disabled veteran is thankful he won't be homeless for the holidays.

His landlord tried to evict him when he got behind on rent due to mounting medical bills.

T.S. Berry, 72, is fighting cancer. He said medical bills and paperwork problems were a perfect storm that left him homeless.

That is until the VFW paid his bill at the last moment.

Berry said he lived paycheck to paycheck for years until medical problems hit.

"Living on paycheck to paycheck, that's kind of hard to save money," Berry said. "With the knee, the shoulder and the cancer, now I have to have a bilateral hip replacement."

Berry is battling the VA over who should pay those bills. Right now, he pays the copays for cancer treatments and a large dental bill was thousands of dollars.

Berry says his landlord wanted money, not excuses.

"I paid my medical bill instead of paying my rent," he said. "They needed a check yesterday and if they didn't get a check yesterday, we were going to court today."

The matter went to court, but the eviction was postponed because the VFW promised to pay the backrent.

He said he is grateful he can stay.
