KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A teen is dead and three other teens were hurt after a car slammed into a tree Wednesday morning in south Kansas City.

A 16-year-old male is dead, while three others are in critical condition.

The victim has been identified as DeSean "Shawn" Colbert.

The single-vehicle crash happened shortly before 10:30 a.m. at 96th Terrace and Spring Valley Road.

Investigators said a Chevy was observed driving through the neighborhood, speeding. Just prior to crash, it was traveling north on Spring Valley Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The car slid passenger-side first into a tree on the west side of Spring Valley Road. Colbert was in the front passenger seat.

“It’s awful,” said Kansas City police sergeant Kari Thompson. “We are all humans, we have families. I cannot imagine the grief that these families are going to endure.”

Friends say a live social media post quickly turned from smiles to a deadly crash that killed a teenager.

Their friend was recording when the car he was riding in hit a tree killing him and injuring three more.

“Shawn is dead,” said friend Ayriana Jones. I can’t stop crying. "I was like oh no not Shawn. She said Shawn is gone. I saw the live video.”

Right before this crash friends say the young men were recording a live video. Kansas City police are not confirming the video is from Wednesday’s crash, but investigators are reviewing it.

Police say speed may have caused the driver to lose control while trying to make a turn.

Friends want Shawn's family to know he won't be forgotten.
