INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

An elderly woman died in a house fire Wednesday morning.

Authorities say a neighbor saw fire and smoke and called 911 about 6:40 a.m. to the 12700 block of Erickson Road.

While firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly, they say the woman who was inside was not able to make it out in time. They say it appears she lived alone because she was the only in the home when the fire broke out.

The state fire marshal was called to the scene. Firefighters say the home may not have had working smoke alarms.

“Crews that went inside said that they did not hear any smoke detectors going off, and further in our investigation we'll determine if indeed that was the case or not. But right now, it's an active investigation, and we just have that preliminary information,” Deputy Fire Chief Mark Carrick said.

Fire investigators from three different agencies came out, all trying to get more answers and trying to figure out where the fire started and what caused it.

Neighbors KCTV5 spoke with say the victim was a retired nurse and a grandmother through her three children. She had lived in the home for about 35 years.

"It is sad and especially if she’s elderly and she couldn’t get out and no one there to help her,” neighbor Cynthia Fillpot said. "The family will never be able to have a Thanksgiving again that’s normal.”

Another neighbor who had known her his whole life said she was on hospice care.
