KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

One man is in custody after an armed standoff at an east Kansas City motel.

Police were called about 6:10 a.m. Wednesday to assist firefighters on an ambulance call at the Super Budget Inn near U.S. Highway 40 and Phelps Road.

When officers arrived on scene they were told by paramedics that a man pointed a gun at them inside a motel room at this location. Paramedics were able to  exit the room safely.

The man then closed the door and refused to come out of the room.

An Operation 100 was called and negotiators responded.

The man surrendered about 9 a.m. and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
