KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

The Verruckt Waterslide at Schlitterbahn will be coming down once the investigation is concluded.

Schlitterbahn just issued this statement:

All of us at Schlitterbahn have been heartbroken over the tragedy that occurred on Verrückt. In our 50 years of providing an environment for families and friends to gather, we’ve never experienced this kind of devastating event. The safety of our staff and our guests is our top priority. We are parents and grandparents ourselves and many of us have ridden Verrückt with our own children and grandchildren over the years it operated.

Once the investigation is concluded and we are given permission by the court, Verrückt will be decommissioned – closed permanently and the slide removed from the tower. In our opinion, it is the only proper course of action following this tragedy.

We will, at some point in the future, announce what will be built in its place.

The announced closure comes four months after 10-year-old Caleb Schwab was killed while riding down the slide.

Schwab was the son of Kansas representative Scott Schwab.

Verruckt opened in July 2014 after its opening date had been pushed back for additional safety testing. The slide was scheduled to open in May but the official launch date was delayed three times.

The slide is 17-stories tall and riders have to navigate 264 steps to the top before taking the 168-foot plunge.

In 2014, the slides co-creator and co-owner of the Texas-based Schlitterbahn franchise said the launch date was delayed for a variety of issues.

"We had so many issues on the engineering side," Jeff Henry said. "Our correction coefficients were all off. Models didn't show air and water friction. A lot of our math was based on roller coasters at first and that didn't translate to a water slide like this. No one had ever done anything like this before."

A weight and occupant limit was set for Verruckt. Three riders are allowed on at a single time and the total weight limit is 550 pounds. These changes were made after multiple safety run-throughs before the slide was open to the public.

Schlitterbahn announced that something will be built in its place in the future.
