KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

A standoff led to a scary situation for officers when an armed man shot at police in Kansas City early Tuesday morning.

It happened about 4:30 a.m. near a gas station on 55th St. and Swartz Road in Kansas City, KS.

Police say a worker inside the gas station called police after he saw a man in the street walking around and waving a gun in the air.

When police arrived, the man was not cooperating with them and fired shots into the air and at police officers. Officers did not return fire.

Officers were able to take the man into custody.

“The officers had some cover, their vehicles, so they were in a safe position where they didn't have to fire at the time. They believed they could talk the gentleman down and we're glad no one is hurt,” Officer Patrick McCallop said.

Police think the man could have a mental illness.

He was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated.
