GLADSTONE, MO (KCTV) -

Police say a suspect has been killed and a Gladstone police officer wounded in the Northland after the suspect pulled out a handgun during a struggle.

The shooting happened about 10:35 p.m. at Northwest Vivion Road and U.S. Highway 169. Kansas City police officers were called to assist Gladstone police at a traffic stop in the area.

When officers stopped the vehicle the passenger ran from the vehicle, leading police on a foot chase. Officers caught up to the man and tried to take them into custody. This led to a struggle.

During the struggle, the man pulled out a handgun and multiple shots were fired. The man was killed and a Gladstone officer was also shot. Police described the suspect only as a white man in his late teens.

The officer was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.

Police were able to arrest the driver of the vehicle who was questioned and later released.

The Kansas City Fraternal Order of Police tweeted out saying they are expecting the officer to live.

The shooting came on the same day a San Antonio officer was fatally shot and a St. Louis officer was critically wounded.
