KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

It’s been 10 years since Misty Horner died after giving birth and her family is still struggling to forgive.

Misty Horner died of an infection a month after the home birth of her stillborn daughter, Sydney.

“It hurts as much today as it did 10 years ago,” said Darrell Mansfield, Misty’s dad.

Misty’s parents sued Misty’s husband, Caleb Horner, for her death in 2009 and won.

According to attorney Danny Thomas, the Horner's were part of a religious group that didn’t believe in modern medicine.

The Manifolds say Horner used unsterilized scissors in an attempt to deliver their baby and prevented Misty from getting medical treatment.

“I can’t imagine anybody that’s supposed to love somebody to let them lay there 30 days and have each of their organs shut down until she finally had a massive heart attack and died,” said Gail Mansfield, Misty’s mother. “She was full of septic.”

KCTV5 reached out to Horner for comment with no success.

Misty’s parents believe he’s probably struggling, too. They hope to keep their daughter’s story alive in hopes or protecting others.

“I don’t want her life to be forgotten,” said Darrell Mansfield. "She was a good, strong girl. And we don’t want her death caused by a cult to go unnoticed. This group is very convincing. You can slip into it so easily.”

A vigil will be held Monday at 5 p.m. at Floral Hills East Memorial Gardens on what would have been Misty’s 40th birthday.
