KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Jenny Donaldson still struggles to accept her son Chad’s death.

He was shot and killed while walking down the street in December 2014 and his murder is still unsolved.

“The second year's been harder than the first year,” she said. “It's almost indescribable. It's the worst kind of pain you can feel from the deepest within your body.”

It's hard not to feel utterly alone after a tragedy like this, but one local organization is working to make things easier.

Another young man, Corey Laykovich, was stabbed to death when he was just 22 years old. His mother Michelle Metje founded Corey’s Network in his name to counsel others through their loss and to help pay for funeral expenses.

“There's a reason that there is no word for a mom who's lost a child or a dad who's lost a child,” she said. “If you're a child who's lost a parent, you're an orphan. If you've lost a spouse, you're a widow or a widower. But there's no word because we don't expect it. It's not natural. It shouldn't happen.”

It shouldn’t but it does and it leaves mothers like Donaldson in desperate need. “Knowing that there are other people who know exactly how I feel because they're going through the same thing,” she said, “it means a lot.” “I'm not sure what I would do without the support of Corey's Network,” she added.

Corey’s legacy lives on through Metje’s work. She wants people to know that “you can live through the worst day of your life and still be able to grow and to love and to give.”

Giving... even when so much was taken.

Corey’s Network has funded 20 funerals this year.
