WICHITA, KS (KWCH) - A six-day-old girl is missing and many are wondering why the Kansas Bureau of Investigation hasn't issued an Amber Alert.

Wichita police are working to track down leads and have asked for the public's help, providing information on a vehicle they're looking for and sharing photos of baby Sofia Victoria Gonzalez Abarca.

Wichita Police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow says her department is proceeding like there is an Amber Alert with the information it's shared, but the case has not met the right criteria for the KBI to formally issue the alert.

The explanation boils down to there not being a suspect identified in the case, Woodrow says. She issued the following statement Thursday night:

"One of the criteria includes knowing suspect information to be able to put out to the public. At this time the Wichita Police department does not have any suspect information to put out, therefore no Amber alert can be issued at this time. The Wichita Police Department is working closely with the KBI and if any facts change, and a suspect is determined, an Amber alert will be issued immediately. Again, what's important to focus on at this time is that there is a six day old missing and we need to share this information in order to help find her."

Woodrow says the fatal shooting of Sofia's mother is being investigated as a suspicious death. Police are searching for a purple Cadillac with Kansas tag number 716-GET, but there has been no indication that Sofia is in that car and its driver is not considered a suspect at this time.

"We do not consider (the driver) a suspect," Woodrow says. "(We're) just trying to get in contact with him to see if he knows anything. There's nothing to be afraid of with that vehicle. It's just somebody that we're trying to locate."

The KBI offered this explanation for why they haven't issued an Amber Alert:

"We have criteria that must be met before an Amber Alert is issued. We are awaiting confirmation on important details from our local law enforcement partners before we are able to issue an alert in this instance. The decision whether or not to use the alert system is made in collaboration with our local law enforcement partners. Nobody is more focused on finding this baby than Kansas law enforcement. Please stay posted in case an alert is issued."
