KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

It could take months to clear away the brick and mortar that once stood in downtown Kansas City.

Crews on Tuesday began taking down the walls of the Evangelistic Center Church.

The building was still smoldering as firefighters continued spraying it. Members of the church have been checking in all day, some taking home bricks from the rubble.

Members of the charge say the fire will not prevent them from helping their community.

“We can worship and sing, but if we pass people by who are in need, we are missing one of the most important parts of the gospel,” said Darrell Robinson, associate pastor. “Every day, someone walks by here in need. We have been meeting this morning to figure out ways to give to those in need, who are depending on us.”

The next step for the congregation is to rebuild the food donations, clothing collections and other ministries they hosted at the church.

“We’ve been meeting this morning to keep giving to the people who are depending on us,” Robinson said.

The church is asking people who want to help in their ministry give directly to Heartland Rehab Center.
