LEE'S SUMMIT, MO (KCTV) -

A fire caused significant damage at a Lee’s Summit apartment complex on Monday.

The fire happened on SE 291 Highway. One apartment resident was taken to the hospital.

Lee’s Summit firefighters said they received a call about an explosion at the apartment complex.

The caller told them that they heard the sound of an explosion and the roof lifted up and settled down.  When the person got around to the front of the structure, there were visible flames and the caller assisted a person exiting the building,

When the fire department arrived, the front of the structure was fully involved and they went into a defensive stance.

They made sure that all the residents were accounted for and continued their fight of the fire.

Six of the apartment's 14 complexes sustained significant damage.

Suzi Hollis was visiting family when her step-son, who lives with her, called her with the news.

“Everything is on fire,” she said he told her. “I did. My neighbor saved my dog, so that was good.”

Carmen Stewart, another apartment resident, said she heard a big boom.

“We heard a big boom and my husband looked outside, didn't see anything, and then I went to see what all the commotion was outside and somebody hollered that the apartment was on fire,” Stewart said.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.  They were told that someone was attempting to light a furnace.
