KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

You've heard a lot of stories this week about divisions in the United States, but on Saturday a group wanted to focus on working together.

Unity in the Community is a new program partnered with the Kansas City Crime Stoppers program. It's designed to connect police officers to the people they serve.

On Saturday, they gathered together for food and entertainment and to create a dialogue with Kansas City police officers.

The organizer of the event is a former gang member who changed his life for the better. Now he's working to help Kansas City neighborhoods work together as a community advocate.

“It really is about bringing law enforcement and citizens together,” said Ossco Bolton. “I believe in community, but you can't have a community without including law enforcement. Law enforcement is part of the community as well.”

Crime Stoppers was present on Saturday to speak to the crowd. They say it helps them solve crimes when people feel more comfortable helping the police.
