KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Reality TV star and entertainment reporter Giuliana Rancic is opening up about her troubling conceiving and how the heartbreaking ordeal may have actually saved her life.

Giuliana Rancic was in town Thursday night for a women's Wine and Wisdom event hosted by North Kansas City Hospital. She is the host of E's Fashion Police and has her own clothing line.

"I have to keep getting out there, have to keep sharing my story," she said.

When Rancic and her husband, Bill Rancic, began their reality show, they didn't realize they would end up with cameras rolling during the most difficult and scary moments of their lives. First came their struggle with infertility. Then, at the age of 36, Giuliana Rancic was diagnosed with breast cancer.

"Sometimes, I talk about and get choked up. It's still hard ... gets easier over time, but it does stay with you," she said.

Giuliana Rancic has been cancer free for six years now, and while she lives with the fear that it could return, she says she's actually a much happier person now.

"It's an opportunity to turn the volume down on what doesn't matter, and turn the volume up on what does," she said.

For the Rancics, that now includes their 3-year-old son, Duke, who they are raising in Bill Rancic's hometown of Chicago.

And now, her staff at the restaurant they own in Chicago called RPM is under strict orders to call Giuliana Rancic immediately if any Chicago Cubs players come in to eat.

"I will be the server that night, bring them their dessert, whatever they want," she said.
