SHAWNEE, KS (KCTV) -

The principal of a Shawnee school is spending all day Friday on the roof reading.

It's part of a program that challenges principals to encourage students to read.

Principal Andrew Frye of Clear Creek Elementary School, 5815 Monticello Rd., decided to take up the challenge for Young Readers Week.

“I tell my students it's one of the most important skills that they can master. It's so important for their success both academically, as they have to read to learn more but also to learn new ideas,” Frye said.

As part of the challenge, one lucky elementary school principal will win Kate DiCamillo books for the entire school.
