ST. LOUIS (AP) -

Republican Eric Greitens, a former Navy SEAL officer who founded a charity for military veterans, has won the race for Missouri governor.

Greitens defeated Democratic rival Attorney General Chris Koster during Tuesday's election. It was Greitens' first time running for public office.

Greitens' victory means Republicans will regain control of the state's top executive seat after eight years under Democrat Jay Nixon. Nixon was barred by term limits from seeking re-election.

That gives the GOP-led state Legislature opportunities to pass party-backed policies such as right to work without threats of vetoes from a Democratic governor.

Greitens is a former Democrat. He was elected after a tough Republican primary and an expensive and contentious fight with Koster, a former Republican state senator
