Out of area text message encouraged Kansas City family to vote at wrong location

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

At least one Kansas City family says they received a text message encouraging them to vote at a different and incorrect polling location.

Beth Morrison said her husband received a text Sunday evening informing the couple to vote at a church along Swope Parkway - even though the couple lives near 49th and State Line.

They have voted at the same location for 20 years. The text they received encouraged them to head five miles away to a church.

"This was very odd," Morrison said. "Plus, the number that it was being texted from was not a number we recognized."

The text message came from a 636 area code number in St. Louis. It's a number you cannot call from a cell phone. When Morrison tried calling it from a landline, the call just rings.

"We don't need to be manipulated," she said. "It's hard enough making a decision and coming to that decision and being comfortable. We don't need to confuse each other."

KCTV5 reached out to the Kansas City Board of Election.

They say it's the first text they have heard anyone encouraging a voter to go to a wrong location.
