TOPEKA, KS. (WIBW) -- The Topeka Police Department has identified the officer shot while exchanging gunfire with a robbery suspect over the weekend.

On Monday, the department confirmed Det. Brian Hill was shot Saturday while he and another officer were trying to capture the suspect. The 25-year-veteran underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.

Det. Hill's family and the Topeka Police Dept. say they appreciate the outpouring of support over the past several days.

Community members interested in making donations to the expenses incurred by the Hill family can do so by calling 785-368-9436 or in person at the Topeka Police Credit Union, 320 S. Kansas Ave.

The suspect who was shot in the exchange is undergoing medical treatment at a local hospital. Police said his injuries are still considered life-threatening.

They did not release the name of that suspect.
