KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

One person is dead following a fire Sunday evening at 37th Street near College Avenue in Kansas City.

The Kansas City Fire Department tweeted about the fire just after 6:30 p.m.

A man between the ages of 50-60 years old was found dead, according to fire crews on the scene. No fire detectors were inside the home.

"Again the true travesty here is that we had the smoke detectors that are free and then if people just reach out," said James Garrett, public information officer for the Kansas City Fire Department. "Individuals could get out of the situation such as this."

A family member tells KCTV5 the victim's name was Harold Woods, Jr.

Friends say he was a former firefighter in Kansas City. He liked helping people in the neighborhood whenever he could.

One day later, the pain remains for friends and neighbors.

"Last night there were so many people out here, you'd think it was a funeral but it wasn't," said Margaret Davison.

"If you met him, you'd know he was a good guy," neighbor Maurice Marshall said. "Man, if you knew him you'd never forgot him. He's a good man. I don't know why he ran back in there. We're going to miss him."

Woods was also a member of Palestine Missionary Baptist Church. His church family says they're going to miss seeing Harold every Sunday.

Information about the cause of the fire is unknown at this point.

There's no word on the victim.
