KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police are investigating after a woman claims she was shot in the chest while driving, but now investigators believe there may be much more to the story.

A homeowner on Oakland Avenue admits to shooting a woman in Kansas City, but said she was trying to break in his home.

The victim told police she had been shot while driving near 80th Street and Highland.

The woman made her way to her grandmother’s house on Michigan Avenue for help.

“It’s terrifying, terrifying,” said Lida Johnson, the victim's grandmother. “She kept hollering ‘I don’t want to leave my children. I don’t want to leave my children.’”

The woman is expected to be OK, but now police are questioning her story.

Police believe she may be the same person who was shot at the home on Oakland Avenue. The homeowner told police he heard noises through his bedroom window, as if someone was trying to push it open.

He then look outside, saw someone messing around with his car. Afterwards, the man claims he grabbed his gun, walked outside and began shooting.

Police are also investigating if the man was justified in firing his gun.

“In the middle of the night, when you feel sounds and those sounds are outside your home, obviously there can be a perceived threat,” defense attorney Gregg Watt said. “It’s just a question of whether that person felt as though they were in serious danger of bodily injury or death.”
