FAIRWAY, KS (KCTV) -

A creek in Johnson County that hasn't been properly tended to could cause damage to area homes and property.

Rock Creek was just a trickle when Robin Norris bought her home more than 30 years ago.

Since then, the community has grown and the creek now overflows with runoff during a big rain.

Norris says the water almost reached her home during the summer.

"You can see the power the water has here," she said. "We ended up with water halfway up the yard here."

During a massive rain storm in late August, she heard cracking noises. Now, two giant trees lay over the creek.

The giant trees are close enough to the water to catch limbs and other debris. Norris worries they'll create a backlog during the next big rain.

"My fear is that as it gets colder and the ice builds up, brush is going to back up there and it's going to cause a dam," Norris said.

Norris went to the City of Fairway, but discovered they couldn't remove the trees because it didn't fall under their jurisdiction.

A Kansas Department of Transportation spokesperson told KCTV5 the department has examined the trees and determined they are not an immediate threat.

KDOT says they plan to remove the trees next spring.
