KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

An Independence man is accused of assaulting a Kansas City police officer.

James D. Brisbin, 26, was charged with second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action.

Police officers from the Kansas City Police Department responded on Oct. 28 on a report of a man striking a woman on the 400 block of Grand Boulevard.

Court records state after uniformed police officers approached the man, he reached into his backpack and removed a screwdriver. Police ordered the man to drop the screwdriver, but say he began threatening the officers and approached them.

An officer retreated, but Brisbin advanced on the officer. The officer in response fired his weapon, hitting Brisbin.

Brisbin was transported to the hospital, where he survived. Witnesses told police he was acting violently prior to the officers' arrival.

A $50,000 bond has been requested.
