LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -

A Lawrence middle school faculty member has been suspended for allegedly making racist remarks.

The Lawrence School District said the teacher, who instructs students at South Middle School, was suspended with pay.

The district announced the news in a release. They said the school received a complaint against the teacher from a student's family member.

No details about the remarks were made available. The release only said the remarks were made in class.

Statement from the school district:

The school administration shared information from its investigation with the district’s Human Resources Office on Tuesday, which began its own inquiry into the complaint.

Sharing deep concern about these allegations, Superintendent Kyle Hayden suspended the employee, with pay, in accordance with Lawrence Board of Education Policy and to ensure a fair and complete investigation.

This is a personnel matter, so confidentiality prohibits Lawrence Public Schools from providing additional information.
