ST. JOSEPH, MO (KCTV) -

Most newspapers have endorsed Democratic Party presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

A local newspaper near the Kansas City metro area is one of three so far that's endorsed Republican nominee Donald Trump.

The St. Joseph News-Press announced its endorsement of Trump last weekend, saying his leadership and the Republican Party offer the best hope for the country.

The endorsement comes in part because of the belief Trump is a candidate of change

"We endorse Trump for president in the belief he can bring about fundamental change — not alone, but in partnership with his party and a coalition of others drawn from every walk of life who think we can do better than what government has offered under eight years of President Obama," the endorsement reads.

The paper calls Trump a flawed candidate but adds his past has not "disqualified" him from the race.

Clinton's record as Secretary of State and her view on economic policies also led to the endorsement, the paper says.

"Donald Trump became relevant due to the glaring failings of an entrenched governing bureaucracy defined by Obama and Clinton," the paper says. "A vote for Trump is a vote to change this dynamic and to cast our lot with a movement that is bigger than Trump alone."

Dennis Ellsworth, editor in chief of the newspaper, told Poynter that the endorsement led to anger for some readers.

“We’ve heard from about two dozen callers this morning," Ellsworth told Poynter. "We’ll be working to keep them as subscribers, and part of that is to remind each of them that one editorial opinion — however controversial — needs to be balanced against the many other reasons they chose to subscribe in the first place."

Earlier this month, The Kansas City Star announced its endorsement of Hillary Clinton.
