SHAWNEE, KS (KCTV) -

Knowing how to handle an emergency that could lead to one's adrenaline pumping can be difficult to manage.

One local gun shop, however, is looking to assist people how to handle those crucial moments.

Becky Bieker and her staff at She's A Pistol in Shawnee, KS is teaching a course on the matter.

"You have to train your brain to respond when something happens, so you decrease the likelihood of freezing," Bieker said. "Anything from broken limbs, concussions, bullet hole injuries."

Instructors at the school teach people how to respond to just about anything.

Bieker knows the importance of such training all too well.

In January of 2015, Bieker's husband, Jon, was killed in a botched robbery at their store's old location. Bieker was harmed during the shootout.

"We can't always wait for an ambulance or help, a lot of times we have to do it ourselves until help gets there," she said. "We literally give them tools that determine if they could survive an encounter or not."

The course is set to revamp back in November.
