SHAWNEE, KS (KCTV) -

A ruling issued by a Johnson County Judge means four suspects in a deadly shootout at a Shawnee gun shop will each receive a separate trial.

Store owner Jon Bieker was shot and killed during the attempted robbery of She’s a Pistol when he came to the assistance of his wife Becky.

Becky Bieker owned the store with her husband. He was in back when the robbers came in and made demands on Jan. 9, 2015.

Prosecutors said four men plotted to rob the gun shop.

Becky Bieker was hit and knocked unconscious, then Jon Bieker got into a shootout with the gunmen and was ultimately killed.

Hakeem Malik, De'Anthony Wiley, Londro Patterson and Nicquan Midgyett are all charged with murder in the shooting. Their next court appearance is Dec. 16 for a scheduling conference.

For Bieker, reliving the nightmare not once but four times will be tough.

“Within those 24 seconds, those four men had a head start on us because they knew what was coming,” Bieker said. “Those few seconds literally make the difference between life and death.”

Bieker said her positive attitude in opening a new story and dedication to not missing a single court appearance is all thanks to her husband.

“He was amazing,” she said. “I’ve never met anything like him. I look around and I see the things he would have loved, the things he would have been proud of. The only reason I’m there is to honor john and make sure our community stays safe from those four.”

At least one suspect has claimed self defense in the case.

They will be back in court in December.
