KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The mother of a boy seriously hurt in a drive-by shooting is opening up about that night and her hope for an arrest.

On Tuesday evening, 5-year-old Joel was shot in his upper leg and buttocks. He was simply playing games in his room at home near the intersection of Denver Avenue and Smart Avenue.

His family was stunned as to how such a thing could happen. Joel’s mother, Vanessa Sanchez, noted that they lead quiet lives.

On Friday, Joel was back to his bright and bubbly self. He was all smiles and making jokes with the nurses. "They were making funnies,” he said.

His mother says that he will be back in school by Monday if all goes well.

However, she is scared to be out of the hospital and back at home.

"I'm nervous being in the bathroom because I replay it in my head repeatedly,” said Sanchez. "It hurts my child, it hurts my family. And next time it could hurt someone else's child, which we don't want."

She's hoping that speaking out will encourage someone to say something.

If you know anything you're urged to call the police.
