KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Organizations from across the nation are sending help to the Southeast to help those affected by the devastation of Hurricane Matthew.

This includes experienced volunteers from right here in the Kansas City metro.

The American Red Cross housed 300,000 people in shelters on the east coast in preparation for Hurricane Matthew.

Now, the organization is deploying volunteers to help those in need.

The Red Cross’ Greater Kansas City chapter already has 6 volunteers on the ground.

The chapter sent 6 more Friday morning with emergency response vehicles.

Their duty, going into the areas hit the hardest by Hurricane Matthew, to offer food, clothing, toiletries and other necessities to people affected by the storm.

KCTV5 caught up with two of the volunteers.

Both volunteered back in 2012 during Hurricane Sandy.

“I’ll have to admit I had tears in my eyes in Sandy,” volunteer Orvil Emanuel said. “I’ve been taking all my life, maybe I should be giving a little bit. And that’s just about the bottom line for me.”

“Your biggest reward is seeing the look of appreciation they give you when you’re helping someone who really needs it,” volunteer Walter Davis said. “And that makes you feel good inside. Warm and fuzzy.”

The Red Cross volunteers will stay for at least two weeks, and up to 2 to 3 months depending on how long they are needed.
