KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

As a hurricane bears down on the country of Haiti, one local nonprofit group is already in the country.

Heart to Heart International has had 130 people in Haiti since 2010, the year a devastating earthquake happened in the country.

Progress has been made rebuilding the country, especially when it comes to helping residents get access to health care.

Now, with Hurricane Matthew on the horizon, Heart to Heart is preparing to help out more.

"In a disaster, people lose everything and one of the most important things we can put in their hands is a kit full of soap and shampoo and towels and wash clothes," said James Mitchum, the chief executive officer of Heart to Heart. "Thing is they need to feel good. We need more of those."

Mitchum says those hygiene kits and direct donations to the organization are the two best ways to help out.

Hygiene kits can be assembled at home or at work.

It's estimated that Heart to Heart spends $500,000 each month it operates in Haiti.
