KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

This is a challenging time in our nation when, more than ever, police and the public they serve need to come together.

The Kansas City Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 99 announced plans Monday to make our city a safer place to live.

It's called the Kansas City Police Officers Memorial Foundation. It was started just two months ago to focus on community outreach and building trust between police officers and the community.

And on Monday, they held their first fundraiser at the Deuce at the National Golf Course in Parkville.

One hole at a time, the golfers raised money to allow police to connect with the community and regain the trust shaken by recent events across the country.

“It is extremely important to us to show children we are human and we care,” said Brad Lemon, president of Kansas City Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 99.

Lemon knows full well that children today spend a lot of time online, and often what they read about police officers doesn't paint them in a true light.

“Not everything you read on the Internet is true, and police officers are first and foremost community members that do a job. If we can create relationships at a young age, we can positively affect a child's lives forever,” Lemon said.

One example how the money will be used was when officers recently took a group of kids to their first Kansas City Royals game. In normal street clothes, they got to show the kids that they are quite normal and fun.
