KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

With hurricane Matthew’s threat to Jamaica, Haiti, and Cuba only looking more and more likely, one man is preparing for the storm.

Ja'dan Johnson lives in southeastern Jamaica with his family. A total of five people live there.

Unfortunately, that’s the side of the island that's expected to get hit the hardest by the hurricane.

Johnson’s home is reinforced and has a hurricane shelter. "Should conditions worsen, we just slide the shutters and we're good to go,” he said.

However, on Sunday afternoon, Johnson said you wouldn't be able to tell that a dangerous storm is on the way with things being so sunny and breezy.

One thing that does say a storm is on the way is how packed supermarkets have been in the past few days and how local businesses have been prepping.

Johnson’s concerned about his fellow islanders, though, as there's a sense of uncertainty in the air. “People are wondering 'Should I be prepared?', 'Should I go and spend money and then the hurricane doesn't come and I lose my money?'” Johnson said. “So the uncertainty lingers, and you might find that some people end up in a very bad situation should the hurricane decide to make a sudden turn.”

One thing Johnson mentioned is that Jamaicans aren't easily scared by the weather. "Despite a hurricane coming, people are still laughing, smiling,” he said. “It's a pretty chirpy environment, but you can still see the uncertainty."

"We're just putting ourselves in the best position," he said. "So we're preparing for the worst, but expecting the best."
